EMV/Chip Card FAQ's
How will I use my new Debit Card for purchases?
- It's easy. If the retailer has a chip-enabled terminal, simply insert your chip card face up in the terminal. The chip card will remain in the terminal while the transaction is processed. To authorize your transaction, just follow the prompts as you do today.
- You'll be prompted to enter your PIN or to provide a signature as you normally would to verify the transaction. You may not be asked for a PIN when travelling internationally. Your card is available to be removed from the terminal once the transaction is completed.
- If the retailer is not equipped to read the chip card, just swipe as you do today. For transactions made over the phone or online, nothing changes.
As U.S. merchants begin transitioning to chip card readers, consumers will notice the payment process works a little differently. Not all devices will look the same, but the steps are nearly identical. Here's how it works:
- Rather than swiping your credit card, you will insert it into the front of the card reader with the chip facing up.
- Keep it in the card reader, and follow the prompts on the screen until your transaction is complete.
- Remove the card when it prompts you to. If a signature is required, just sign the receipt and you are done.
**Remember, the chip card will still have the magnetic stripe for use at traditional machines too
Will my existing PIN# continue to work with my new MasterCard Chip Card?
- Yes- you will have the same PIN#. Simply use your card at any ATM using your PIN to activate it- or call the number on the sticker attached to the front of your card.
What is EMV/Chip Technology?
- The smart chip embedded in each EMV card adds layers of security that go far beyond what magnetic-stripe cards can offer. Each EMV transaction is protected with advanced cryptography and a numeric code that changes for each transaction.
Will Chip Cards prevent all fraud?
- No. As the industry continues to develop new ways to protect consumers, perpetrators continue to look for new ways to commit fraud. Chip cards provide an additional layer of security at chip-enabled terminals, on top of the fraud prevention monitoring we currently provide. As always, your purchases are also covered by our zero liability protection, where United Minnesota Bank typically credits your account back for fraudulent charges
Why do I still have to swipe my card at some places?
- Some merchants have not updated their systems to accept EMV/Chip cards. You will simply continue to swipe your cards at these terminals.
Do I need a special wallet to guard my card against skimming machines?
- There are specially lined wallets on the market that are supposed to block a skimmer that someone may be using near you in an attempt to steal your mag stripe data. Having one of these wallets will not guarantee that you are safe from fraud.
Will Chip cards allow people to track my location?
- No. Chip card technology is not a locator system. The chip on your card is limited to supporting authentication of card data when you make a purchase.
